This week's technology highlights: SpaceX completes historic Nasdaq IPO, DOE releases finalized fusion roadmap, AST SpaceMobile adjusts commercial timeline following launch delay, US-Japan announce $1B Genesis Mission partnership, and global AI drug discovery pipeline surpasses 170 clinical programs.


Space: SpaceX IPO and Satellite Communications Restructuring

On June 12, 2026, SpaceX officially listed on Nasdaq under ticker SPCX at $135 per share, representing a valuation of approximately $1.77 trillion — the largest IPO in history. The company raised approximately $75 billion from selling ~4% of shares outstanding. Notably, SpaceX allocated ~30% of public shares to retail investors — far above the typical 5-10% — making this one of the most retail-friendly mega-IPOs ever.

In satellite communications, AST SpaceMobile pushed its commercial service timeline from late 2026 to 2027 following a Blue Origin New Glenn launchpad failure on May 28. The company's next-generation BlueBird satellites carry 2,400 sq ft phased arrays — the largest commercial communications arrays in LEO — delivering 120 Mbps per coverage cell. AST has secured over $1.2 billion in contracted revenue from 50+ MNO partners.

Starlink Direct-to-Cell has meanwhile expanded emergency SOS coverage to 100 countries and is extending to SMS+voice services. The competition between two architectural philosophies — large aperture/low density (AST) vs small aperture/high density (Starlink) — is defining the future of direct-to-device satellite connectivity.


Energy: DOE Fusion Roadmap and Solar Expansion

On June 9, DOE released the finalized Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap. The 52-page strategy adopts a Build-Innovate-Grow framework targeting commercial fusion power by the mid-2030s, with input from 800+ scientists. Six core technology domains span structural materials to plant engineering.

In solar, Longi reported 2025 revenue exceeding CNY 70 billion with 86.58 GW module shipments. HPBC 2.0 achieves 24.8% mass production efficiency. Global cumulative solar capacity is on track to surpass 2 TW in 2026. Oxford PV has started the first commercial perovskite-silicon tandem panel line in Germany at 200 MW capacity.


AI: Genesis Mission and Drug Discovery

On June 4, the US and Japan announced a $1 billion Genesis Mission partnership across 11 joint research teams covering quantum information science, fusion energy, autonomous laboratories, biotechnology, and advanced materials. Japan's Fugaku supercomputer will collaborate with DOE's exascale computing systems for plasma simulation and materials discovery.

In AI drug discovery, global clinical pipeline reaches 173 AI-originated programs. The first AI-discovered drug is expected to receive FDA approval in 2026-2027. Insilico Medicine's ISM001-055 (Phase II, IPF) and Recursion's collaboration with Roche are key data points to watch.


Humanoid Robotics: Production Milestone

Tesla Optimus Gen 2, Figure 02, and Apptronik Apollo all reached limited production simultaneously in Q2 2026 — the first time three humanoid robot programs transitioned from prototype to industrial deployment. Initial shipments total in the hundreds, deployed in automotive, logistics, and assembly environments. Unit costs remain high (estimated $200,000-500,000 per unit) but are expected to decline below $100,000 by 2027-2028 as supply chains scale.


Medical Technology

In gene editing, FDA expanded Casgevy (sickle cell gene therapy) approval to pediatric patients, a milestone for CRISPR applications in children. Prime Editing technology received its first human clinical trial approval, marking a transition from "cut and repair" to "precise rewrite" in genetic medicine.


Outlook

Financialization of the space economy: SpaceX's IPO signals the space economy's transition from infrastructure buildout to financialization. Satellite communications, in-orbit services, and space manufacturing companies will follow into public markets.

Fusion policy acceleration: The combination of DOE roadmap finalization, Genesis Mission expansion, and $9B+ in private investment shows fusion has transitioned from physics research to engineering and regulatory phases.

AI integration into physical economy: From autonomous laboratories to factory humanoids to energy system optimization — AI is moving from the digital world into the physical world. The Genesis Mission's "AI-driven scientific discovery" paradigm will accelerate this trend.

Solar+storage systematization: AI data center energy demand is emerging as a new structural driver for solar development. Long-term PPA contracts from Microsoft, Google, and Amazon provide unprecedented revenue visibility.
