Vietnam Joins the Humanoid Robot Race: How VinDynamics and Skild AI's Partnership is Reshaping Asian Robotics

Vietnam's Vingroup subsidiary VinDynamics partnered with US-based Skild AI on humanoid robotics and embodied AI, investing $12.75M and deploying robots at VinFast factories.

Vietnam Joins the Humanoid Robot Race: How VinDynamics and Skild AI's Partnership is Reshaping Asian Robotics

On June 8, 2026, VinDynamics, the robotics subsidiary of Vietnam's largest conglomerate Vingroup, and US-based humanoid robotics startup Skild AI announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop humanoid robot and embodied AI technologies. Vingroup also announced a $12.75 million strategic investment in Skild AI and signed two turnkey contracts totaling approximately VND 52 billion (approximately $2 million) for robot and AI solutions to automate production at VinFast automotive factories.

VinDynamics is the robotics subsidiary of Vingroup. Vingroup is Vietnam's largest private enterprise group, with businesses spanning real estate (Vinhomes), automotive (VinFast), electronics (VinSmart), healthcare (Vinmec), and education (Vinschool), with total revenue exceeding $15 billion in 2025.

The partnership path chosen by VinDynamics is "external technology introduction + local manufacturing integration" — rapidly acquiring technical capabilities through investment and collaboration with top US robotics startups, then leveraging VinFast's manufacturing advantages to achieve commercial deployment.

Skild AI is headquartered in San Mateo, California, and focuses on general-purpose humanoid robots. Its technical approach emphasizes "scaled learning" through massive simulation training and real-world data collection.

The first phase of collaboration involves deploying robot and AI solutions at VinFast electric vehicle factories, starting with material handling, parts assembly assistance, and quality inspection, gradually expanding to more complex tasks.

The Vietnamese government is promoting the "Made in Vietnam 2025-2035" initiative, aiming to transform from a low-cost assembly hub to a high-end manufacturing base. Manufacturing wages have risen approximately 150% over the past decade, making automation a necessary condition for maintaining competitiveness.

Three major global humanoid robot camps: the United States (Tesla Optimus, Figure AI, Agility, Skild AI), China (Unitree, UBTECH, Xiaomi), and Japan (Honda, Toyota). Vietnam has chosen to align with the US camp, similar to South Korea's Hyundai acquiring Boston Dynamics.

Asia's robotics hierarchy: Japan and South Korea are the first tier (Fanuc, Yaskawa, Boston Dynamics), China is the second tier (rapidly catching up), and Southeast Asia is the third tier (vast manufacturing demand).

$12.75 million investment comparison: Tesla Optimus development cost exceeded $1 billion, Figure AI raised over $750 million. Vingroup's strategy is "small equity + exclusive partnership."

Observatory Analysis: The VinDynamics-Skild AI partnership represents a new model combining technological innovation from developed countries with manufacturing scenarios in emerging markets. Over the next 2-3 years, similar cross-border humanoid robot collaborations are expected to increase significantly.
