Collecting solar energy in space is unaffected by the atmosphere, clouds, or day-night cycles, theoretically enabling 24/7 reception of solar radiation 10 times more intense than on Earth's surface. This has brought renewed attention to the concept of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP).
Technical Breakthroughs
The latest microwave wireless power transmission experiments have achieved 10% end-to-end efficiency — from solar panel power generation in space to ground reception and conversion to electricity. While still low, this represents a 5x improvement over five years ago. The key breakthrough lies in the design of novel rectifying antennas (rectennas).
Feasibility Prospects
Starship's low launch costs have fundamentally changed the economic feasibility of SBSP. Japan's JAXA, the U.S. Air Force, and China have all restarted related research programs. If efficiency can be improved to 20%, the generation cost of SBSP could become competitive.
