Eyes in the Sky, Watching Every Day
Planet Labs, the San Francisco-based Earth observation company, has successfully launched 20 additional SuperDove satellites, expanding its already massive constellation to unprecedented levels. The launch, which took place on May 31, 2026, adds high-resolution multispectral imaging capacity to the world's largest commercial Earth observation constellation, bringing daily global coverage at 3-meter resolution ever closer to reality.
For those unfamiliar with Planet Labs' approach, it represents a fundamental departure from traditional Earth observation. Legacy satellite operators like Maxar and Airbus build a few large, expensive satellites that orbit at high altitudes, capturing very high resolution images (30 to 50 cm) but with limited revisit frequencies — typically days to weeks between passes over any given location. Planet went the opposite direction: small, cheap satellites in large numbers, trading per-pixel resolution for temporal frequency.
The SuperDove satellites, each roughly the size of a shoebox, weigh approximately 5 kilograms and are built on Planet's standardized CubeSat platform. They orbit at an altitude of about 475 kilometers in sun-synchronous orbits, allowing them to image every location on Earth at the same local solar time each day. With sufficient satellites in the constellation, Planet can image the entire land surface of the Earth — roughly 150 million square kilometers — every day.
What SuperDove Brings
The SuperDove represents a significant upgrade over Planet's earlier Dove and Flock satellites. Each SuperDove carries a multispectral imager capable of capturing imagery in eight spectral bands: coastal blue, blue, green I, green II, yellow, red, red edge, and near-infrared. This expanded spectral coverage allows for more sophisticated analysis than the standard four-band RGB-NIR setup.
The 3-meter resolution means each pixel in a SuperDove image covers a 3-by-3-meter patch of the Earth's surface. This is enough to see individual trees, vehicles, small buildings, and changes in crop rows or soil conditions. It is not enough to read a license plate or identify a person — Planet's satellites are designed for agricultural, environmental, and infrastructure monitoring, not surveillance.
Each SuperDove can image approximately 200 million square kilometers per year, collecting roughly 3 terabytes of data per satellite daily. With the 20 new satellites, the total constellation now exceeds 250 operational SuperDoves, making it the largest satellite fleet ever assembled for commercial Earth observation.
The Launch Details
The 20 SuperDove satellites were carried to orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of a rideshare mission. The Falcon 9 launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, deploying its primary payload along with the Planet satellites as secondary passengers. The SuperDoves were deployed into a sun-synchronous orbit at approximately 525 kilometers altitude, from which they will use their onboard propulsion systems — small butane-fed thrusters — to drift into their operational orbital planes over the coming weeks.
This launch was the sixth SuperDove batch deployment in the last 18 months, reflecting Planet's accelerated production and launch cadence. The company operates its own satellite manufacturing facility in San Francisco, where it produces satellites on an assembly line basis. A single SuperDove can be built in a matter of days, and the per-unit cost — including launch — is estimated at well under $1 million, a fraction of the cost of a traditional Earth observation satellite.
Applications of the Data
Planet's daily 3-meter multispectral imagery has become an essential data source for a wide range of commercial and governmental applications.
Agriculture is the largest commercial market. Farmers and agribusinesses use Planet's imagery to monitor crop health throughout the growing season. The red edge and near-infrared bands are particularly valuable for calculating vegetation indices like NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), which correlates strongly with crop health and biomass. With daily imagery, farmers can detect irrigation problems, pest outbreaks, or nutrient deficiencies within 24 hours of them appearing — a speed that was simply impossible with weekly or biweekly satellite revisits.
Forestry is another major application. Planet's data is used to monitor deforestation in near-real time, detect illegal logging activity, and track forest regrowth after harvest or disturbance. Conservation organizations deploy Planet's alerts to identify deforestation hotspots in the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Southeast Asia, often catching clearing operations within days of their occurrence.
Environmental monitoring includes tracking coastal erosion, monitoring wetland health, detecting oil spills, and observing the impact of natural disasters. When Hurricane Ian struck Florida in 2022, Planet's daily imagery was used by emergency managers to map flooded areas and damage — and because the constellation images every day, they could compare pre- and post-storm conditions without needing to task a satellite.
Government and defense customers use Planet data for mapping, intelligence preparation, and monitoring of treaty compliance. The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has been a significant customer, using Planet's imagery to update its mapping products at a cadence never before achievable.
The Challenge of Data Volume
A constellation of 250 satellites collecting 3 terabytes per day generates an extraordinary volume of data. Planet has built a ground infrastructure to match: a global network of ground stations, cloud-based processing pipelines, and a data platform that makes the imagery searchable and accessible via APIs.
The processing pipeline is a feat of software engineering. Raw images must be orthorectified (corrected for terrain and sensor geometry), atmospherically corrected, and co-registered with existing imagery. Each image is assigned to a specific location on a global grid, and multiple images of the same location are composited to create a seamless, cloud-free base map. The entire process, from raw capture to analysis-ready data, takes roughly 24 hours.
Planet provides several access tiers. The free tier offers low-resolution preview imagery and limited access to the archive. Professional subscriptions provide full-resolution access with API access and analytics tools. Enterprise and government customers get priority tasking, higher frequency revisits, and custom analysis.
Competition in the Growing Market
Planet is not the only company pursuing frequent, high-resolution Earth observation. Capella Space operates a constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites that can image through clouds and at night. Satellogic launches multispectral satellites with sub-meter resolution. BlackSky operates a constellation for frequent revisit imaging. Maxar and Airbus, while focused on very high resolution, are also deploying larger constellations.
But Planet's scale is unmatched. With over 250 satellites in orbit, it can achieve daily global coverage that competitors cannot match. The company's strategy has always been volume over resolution — and with the SuperDove upgrades providing 3-meter clarity, the trade-off is becoming increasingly attractive.
Financial Picture
Planet went public via a SPAC merger in 2021, raising approximately $590 million. The company has grown revenue steadily, reaching over $300 million annually in its most recent fiscal year. However, it has not yet achieved GAAP profitability — the cost of manufacturing satellites, launching them, and operating the ground infrastructure is substantial.
The company's path to profitability depends on growing its subscription base, particularly in agriculture and government. The expanded SuperDove constellation increases the value proposition: more satellites mean more frequent revisits, which means more timely data, which commands higher subscription prices. Planet has also been developing value-added products, including crop health analytics for agriculture and change detection services for government customers.
The Bigger Picture
Planet Labs' approach to Earth observation — many small, cheap satellites instead of a few large, expensive ones — has been validated by both market adoption and technical performance.
